Deaf Person of the Month
A native of South Carolina, Rebecca Giuntoli grew up in Austin, Texas, where she attended and graduated from Texas School for the Deaf. At University of Texas, Austtin, she's studying Environmental Engineering.
She describes this as "a multidoisciplinary approach to environmental issues we have today. We basically act as mediators between corporations, people, and nature. We analyze problems and then create solutions for four common areas of interest: air, climate and energy; sustainable water systems, contaminant fate and transport, and water resources. We study and incorporate elements from chemistry, microbiology, government and regulations, physics, and geology."
As word (and her photos) get around, she's embarked on a career as a professional model. When she went to have her senior photos taken, the photgrapher was skilled with fashion photography, so she asked him if he could do fashion-modeling-style photos instead of the typical senior portrait. "The pictures came out really amazing." Even after she's gained experiences with other photographers, "some of the pictures remain my favorites."
She posted a dazzling gallery on Instagram, and has gotten "so much positive response." Oddly, even though she's used a "#deaftalent" hashtag, many photographers, makeup artists, and others "did not realize I was deaf until we met in person." She's worked successfully with nonsigners, and new opportunities have opened up, including a casting director. "I love to see what the deaf community has to offer because we have so much hidden talent!"
