Benjamin J. Soukup

Ben Soukup is a veteran Deaf-rights advocate, political activist, lobbyist, humanitarian, and entrepreneur. He attended South Dakota School for the Deaf, Gallaudet College, Augustana College, University of Northern Colorado College of Business, and Cornell University. He received an honorary doctorate from Gallaudet University in 2004. Since 1975, he has served as CEO of the Communication Service of the Deaf (CSD), the many-branched nonprofit human-services organization headquartered in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He has headed numerous organizations, including the National Association of the Deaf and Gallaudet University Alumni Association, and worked as a Congressional lobbyist, and continues to lobby state legislatures, on behalf of Deaf and hard-of-hearing citizens—including recognition of ASL, telecommunications access, and the Deaf Children’s Bill of Rights.
